Environmental applications covers everything from developing energy sources that are more environmentally friendly, to decontamination and toxicology. QCM-D is an emerging tool in this area and can be used to study enzyme hydrolysis of biofuel sources, uptake and kinetics of gas storage, as well as deposition rates of particles used in environmental remediation. QCM-D can be combined with several other techniques to get simultaneous and complementary measurement data. Special modules are available for electrochemistry, microscopy or ellipsometry to mention some examples.
